A NEW $3.2 million space for children and family services in Bendigo is just three months away, and the community has the opportunity to shape how it will work.
Kidzspace, based at Helm Street, Kangaroo Flat, will have a range of Bendigo Community Health Services’ pediatric and family-focused specialists under the same roof.
The project aims to ensure all children in Bendigo have an equal start in life – a key part of BCHS’s new strategic direction.
It is due for completion in October.
BCHS chief executive officer Kim Sykes said the integrated centre would make it easier for families facing complex issues to get the help they need.
“Kidzspace works with kids and their families to make sure that every child has the healthiest start possible for them, and we have a very big focus on addressing health inequality,” she said.
The plan includes pediatric consulting rooms, a community kitchen and garden, access to educational toys, therapy rooms and outside play areas. There will also be facilities to support e-health and telemedicine.
Parents will be able to access information about other BCHS services, including mental health and drug and alcohol support.
The state government provided $2.6 million for the centre in 2014, while BCHS invested $600,000.
BCHS senior manager for children, youth and families Andie West said the project is aimed to support families experiencing hardship.
“While they are provided with a family support service, we might also identify that there are a number of other things we could wrap around every member of that family – not just a child focus, parents need a focus too,” she said.
The use of the building could also evolve as the community’s needs evolve.
Shane DeAraugo, of CBA Building, said the design allowed for extra flexibility in the future.
“It will be a multi-function space, purposely designed for flexibility with the community,” he said.
“So as the community changes, so will the building. It won’t be a land-locked concept.”
BCHS is speaking with schools, community groups and individuals to determine the best way to use the new space.
