RSPCA Victoria animal care manager Liz Walker said about 250 cats were waiting for homes.
“The fee waiver applies to our adult cats – four months and over - which is when a cat that has not been desexed can start having litters,” Ms Walker said.
“These cats often get overlooked for adoption for kittens, but they are still so young themselves.”
The no fee for felines initiative runs from Friday, June 24, until Monday, June 27 and is running at RSPCA Bendigo and RSPCA Castlemaine.
Every cat available for adoption is desexed, microchipped and vaccinated.
Ms Walker said normal adoption procedures would apply, to ensure cats and adoptees were well matched.
The fee-free period does not apply to kittens. The adoption fee for a kitten is $185, or $270 for two kittens.
Ms Walker said the cause of the spike in cat numbers was an extended kitten season, prompted by prolonged autumnal weather.
