The work of one of Australia’s most lauded fashion designers will go on display in Bendigo in an exclusive exhibition.
Bendigo Art Gallery will open Maticevski: Dark Wonderland in August, an exhibition of Toni Maticevski designs that has been in the works for a while.
“For many years the team has been keen to work with Toni Maticevski, and we saw an exploration of his practice through his extensive archive as something that would be of great interest to our audience,” the gallery’s senior curator Leanne Fitzgibbon said.
“We have an established relationship with this designer, and have considered the exhibition for many years.”
The exhibition will include selected objects that illustrate the evolution of Mr Maticevski’s body of work and explore his early influences, inspirations and recurring themes in his work.
The Melbourne-born designer is renowned for his exceptional technical skill, his innovative use of fabrics and textiles, and his interpretations of traditional silhouettes.
Ms Fitzgibbon said the idea of a show in Bendigo was raised with Mr Maticevski at a Melbourne Fashion Festival event.
Gallery visitors might have already laid eyes on his work, with some of his designs included in the White Wedding Dress exhibition in 2011 and the Modern Love exhibition in 2013-14.
Ms Fitzgibbon said there was strong interest in contemporary Australian design, and she hoped the exhibition would attract not only those interested in fashion, but others who wanted to learn more about the work of “this most prolific designer”.
“Fashion is an area that is considered an integral part of the exhibition programming for galleries and museums both within Australia and internationally, and provides an important opportunity to examine creative processes and techniques, and explore ideas about society and reflecting cultural influences,” she said.
Mr Maticevski launched his label in 1999, having worked with such labels as Collette Dinnigan, Donna Karan and Cerruti.
He has also designed costumes for such dance institutions as Phillip Adams Dance Lab, a collaboration that saw him score a Helpmann Award alongside milliner Richard Nylon.
Mr Maticevski’s designs have found their way into the collections of Bendigo Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Victoria, Powerhouse Museum in Sydney and the Fashion Institute of Design in Los Angeles.
His show opened Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia in Sydney last week.
The Maticevski: Dark Wonderland exhibition will run from August 13 to November 20, with entry by donation.
