A BENDIGO family are opening the doors of their newly renovated house to raise money for a cause close to home.
Paul, Sue and Tara Johns saw their home transformed in the final challenges of renovation reality show Reno Rumble, which aired late April.
But the public will be able to see the revamped house with their own eyes on Saturday, when the Johnses open their home in support of the Beccky Johns Kidney Discovery Trust.
Beccky, their 23-year-old daughter and sister, would have been thrilled with the renovation of their home on reality television.
But tragically Beccky passed away from non-Hodgkin lymphoma late last November, just two days after her birthday and nine weeks after her diagnosis.
The cancer was caused by the anti-rejection medications she had been taking for the two kidney transplants she had undergone as a result of a lifelong kidney condition.
In her honour Kidney Health Australia, an organisation Beccky worked for before her illness, established the trust to fund research into non-carcinogenic anti-rejection drugs for transplant patients.
Entry to the open day will be by gold coin donation to the trust.
“We knew if it was happening in Bendigo and Becck was here, she would be the first person to want to go round and have a look,” Mrs Johns said.
Reno Rumble winners Lisa and John will attend the open day, along with fellow contestants Scott and Nadia, whom they competed against when renovating the Johns family’s home in the final, and Jim and Hayley.
Local suppliers who contributed to the renovation will attend to see the fruits of their labour, and there will also be coffee and ice cream vans.
The open day will be held on Saturday, May 7, from 10am to 2pm at 2 Tomlins Street, Bendigo.
