Campaspe Shire Council has chosen not to voice an official opinion on the future of its smaller towns’ pools.
A discussion paper on the review of the shire’s aquatic facilities went before council at its meeting on Tuesday, April 19, outlining three options for the future of pools across the shire.
Council officers recommended the council endorse the third option, which proposed the closure of the Colbinabbin, Lockington, Stanhope and Tongala pools and the concentration of all aquatic facilities at Echuca, Rushworth, Rochester and Kyabram.
But council instead voted to release the discussion paper for public comment without affirming a preferred plan of action.
The suggestion of closing the Colbinabbin pool worried some of its residents, who said it was an integral part of the life of the small town.
The other options outlined in the paper are to retain all facilities as they are, or replace the pools at Colbinabbin, Lockington, Stanhope and Tongala with water play features and upgrade the remaining pools.
The public will be able to make submissions on the discussion paper until June 24.
The submissions and selection of the preferred option will be considered at council’s August meeting.
The discussion paper is available at customer services centres and at the council’s website.
