A retired military officer has told Bendigo Senior Secondary College students the greatest privilege of his 31-year career was serving Australia overseas.
Brigadier Steven Lee AM addressed roughly 1800 students this morning, ahead of Bendigo’s Anzac Day ceremonies on Monday.
Ulumbarra Theatre was filled to overflowing, with many students watching the service on monitors in the foyer.
Brigadier Lee served with the Australian Defence Force, including on deployment in Rwanda in the 1990s.
He said soldiers formed a strong bond when deployed on active service because of their shared experience and the horrors they too often witness.
“It’s the same bond I’m sure our forefathers felt.” he said.
School principal Dale Pearce said Anzac Day was an important occasion.
He urged students to reflect on the sacrifices graduates made for their country.
He said the school’s honour roll was filled with the names of men and woman whose sacrifices shaped Australia. This included some who made the ultimate sacrifice.
“Look at the asterisks which show who died. Think about the age of those people. Think about their families,” he said.
