The Ballarat-based javelin thrower is a confirmed member of the Australian team that will head to Rio de Janeiro to compete during August this year.
Mitchell will be back on the Olympic stage after making the final of the women’s javelin – and then placing ninth overall – at the London 2012 Games.
The 33-year-old is joined in the squad by fellow Ballarat products Victoria Mitchell and Brett Robinson, who are part of the group of 28 new athletes added to the Australian team following the four-day national track and field championships in Sydney.
Victoria Mitchell, the eldest of four 33-year-olds in the team, will compete in the 3000m steeplechase.
She is poised for her second appearance at the world’s biggest sporting event after competing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Meanwhile, 24-year-old Robinson is off to his first Games after qualifying for the 5000m run.
All three have ties to the Eureka Athletics Club, with Kathryn Mitchell and Robinson current members and Victoria Mitchell a previous representative who is now based in Sydney.
Ballarat has a strong Olympic interest in five athletes, with race walkers Jared and Rachel Tallent already part of the Australian squad.
The siblings were among the list of seven athletes earlier selected in the team and now form part of a 35-strong outfit.
Rio will be the third Olympics for Jared Tallent, who has recently been celebrating his likely elevation to gold medalist.
This follows a decision from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which banned Russian Sergey Kirdyapkin from a string of events, including the London Olympics 50km walk where he beat the Ballarat export into second place.
Rachel Tallent was picked to make her Olympic debut after winning the Oceania and Australian 20km Race Walking Championships in February.
