Authorities say more than 350 tyres illegally dumped in Eaglehawk will be removed by this Friday – with taxpayers to foot the bill.
The tyres were dumped on two separate sites on Crown land – owned by the state government – and three agencies are liaising to clean the sites and prosecute those responsible.
On Wednesday morning the City of Greater Bendigo removed more than 30 syringes scattered near the tyres dumped in bushland between York Street and McCormacks Road.
The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning assessed the site on Monday and told the Bendigo Advertiser it will remove the tyres by this Friday.
The Advertiser understands DELWP will hire a contractor to remove and recycle the tyres at a cost of several thousand dollars.
“Money spent removing rubbish dumped on public land is money that can’t be used on maintaining and enhancing facilities for the enjoyment of visitors,” a DELWP spokesperson said.
“The illegal dumping of rubbish in our forests is a serious community and environmental issue. DELWP will work with the EPA and the City of Greater Bendigo to investigate who dumped these types and prosecute those responsible to the full extent of the law.”
The Environment Protection Authority Victoria is leading the investigation into who was responsible for the illegal dumping.
