The contemporary ‘cuboid’ building will be the second dwelling on the Kirkwood Road property, sitting behind an original miners’ cottage which was restored by the owners.
“These are new times for Eaglehawk, we don’t have a lot of this sort of design home in the area this is the second development overlooking the lake,”
- Councillor Peter Cox
Whipstick Ward councillor Peter Cox said the development may be a sign of things to come for Eaglehawk.
“We are going to see more and more of these applications, particularly overlooking waterways – that’s a sign of development.”
Councillors voted unanimously for the development at last night’s Greater Bendigo City Council meeting, despite rejecting a similar development proposal for central Bendigo moments earlier.
Councillor Barry Lyons – who spoke in favour of both developments – said council was sending “mixed messages” to developers.
“I’m totally confused… and I think a lot of other people would be too,” the Lockwood Ward councillor said.
“This is completely out of whack because the last building had some style... this is a great, big box thing.
“I don’t see the difference basically.”
But Cr Cox said the difference was “quite simple” – the Milroy Street proposal was rejected because it sat in a heritage overlay.
Cr Cox dismissed the objections of neighbours of the Eaglehawk development – that it would block their views and devalue their properties – as out of the scope of planning consideration. Others – that it would be used as public housing and didn’t cater for parking – he said were plainly false.
