Amy McNamara said her three-year-old son Jett – who suffers from a congenital disorder which left him without a lower spine – needed the chair after outgrowing his walker and had now regained his independence.
“It’s been fantastic, I've got a bad back due to constantly having to pick Jett up, because he’s not like a normal three-year-old,” she said.
“He can now climb in and out of the wheelchair and get himself around by himself.”
Strathdale Pharmacy retail manager Caroline Marsh said the fundraiser had easily raised the several thousand dollars needed to pay for the chair.
“We had people that were coming in that I know for sure struggle on a day-to-day basis giving $50 that was their grandchildren’s Christmas money and they decided they wanted to give it to Jett,” she said.
“We spent most of our day in tears because it was just amazing.”
Ms McNamara said Jett had dubbed his new chair “Hot Wheels”.
“His dad is a mechanic so he’s into cars like this dad, so he makes the ‘broom broom’ sounds and says he’s going to be in his fast Hot Wheels car like daddy,” she said.
