The City of Greater Bendigo says it is unlikely that the pavilion at Albert Roy Reserve can be salvaged for future use after a fire this morning.
Planning and development director Prue Mansfield said alternative arrangements were being made for baseball and cricket clubs as well as other groups that use the building.
“The fire has caused extensive damage and it is unlikely that the building can be saved,” she said.
“Our priorities are to secure the site and make it safe, and to work with the local user groups to ensure they can continue to operate.”
UPDATE: The CFA says firefighters were able to salvage some memorabilia stored in the pavilion that burned down at Eaglehawk’s Albert Roy Reserve overnight.
Firefighter Brittany Maskell said crews arrived at 4.20am to find the building on fire.
“Crews … were able to access the building and bring it under control within 30 minutes,” she said.
“There was quite a bit of furniture inside and memorabilia on the walls which was destroyed unfortunately.
“But our crews were able to rescue some of it from a mezzanine area.”
Firefighters were called back to the site shortly after 8am due to a flare-up that was quickly put out.
EARLIER: Club rooms at Eaglehawk’s Albert Roy Reserve have been gutted by fire overnight.
Scots Baseball Club has taken to Facebook to inform members of the ‘terrible blow’ to the group.
Police are at the scene but are yet to determine the cause of the fire.
Club members say that memorabilia including honour boards, photos, representative uniforms and score books were destroyed in the blaze.
Falcons member Joe Jones said the venue had huge significance for the Bendigo Baseball Association.
“This was the headquarters of baseball originally. It was built by voluntary help – we raised the money for it,” he said.
More to come.
