TWO men charged after a kangaroo was shot in the head with a crossbow near Woodend last year have failed to appear in court.
James Johnathon Calleja and Robert John Calleja, both of Sunbury, face multiple trespass and animal cruelty charges for the alleged shooting on private property in Ashbourne in August.
A warrant has been issued for their arrest after they failed to appear in the Kyneton Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
The male kangaroo, known as Spot, was first seen with an arrow through his head in Ashbourne on August 31.
It took wildlife officers nine days to capture him, before he was tranquilised and the arrow was removed during an operation.
Spot – a large male kangaroo, weighing 75 kilograms – was sent to a wildlife refuge after surgery but died of shock three days later on September 12.
Kangaroos are prone to death by shock when confronted with high-stress situations.
Wildlife Victoria relationship manager Amy Hidge said animal cruelty of this type was all too common in Victoria, but it was difficult for police to press charges.
“Rarely do we actually find out who committed the offence,” she said.
“On all occasions, we rely on the public for their help.”
Anyone who notices animal cruelty is encouraged to contact Wildlife Victoria on 1300 094 535.
