The permanent collection includes many 19th century works by Australian artists as well as some remarkable paintings, sculptures and decorative arts reflecting European salon trends of the time.
The collection also includes an extensive and varied collection of contemporary sculpture, ceramics, decorative arts, photography and works on paper.
The temporary exhibitions on display over summer will interest a range of visitors.
INK REMIX: Contemporary art from mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong is a touring exhibition organised by Canberra Museum and Gallery and curated by Sophie McIntyre.
On display until February 7, this exhibition offers new ways of thinking about ink art as a multifaceted and dynamic form of visual expression that is being embraced and reinterpreted by increasing numbers of contemporary artists in mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
This is the first exhibition presented in Australia to focus on this theme, and it features works in a range of media by 14 established and emerging artists.
Ron Mueck: Pregnant Woman will be exhibited until February 21. From the collection of the National Gallery of Australia, Bendigo Art Gallery is displaying Mueck’s Pregnant Woman alongside the artist’s sketches and models for this iconic artwork.
Mueck is an internationally acclaimed artist and was appointed Associate Artist at the National Gallery, London in 1999.
Mueck has been included in a number of important survey exhibitions in Australia and internationally. He lives and works in London.
Out of Winter: Until February 21 you can see local artist Karen Annett-Thomas’ solo exhibition, Out of Winter.
The exhibition presents a series of textural paintings about memory and the passage of time. Combining a variety of materials including beeswax, oil paint and plaster, Karen builds up tactile layers on her canvases creating a dynamic sculptural surface. Each layer of medium conceals or reveals abstracted imagery and text which offer starting points for contemplation.
