Detective Glen Fisher of the Bendigo Crime Investigation Unit said the attendant at the United petrol station on Marong Road was forced to seek refuge when a man allegedly demanded money armed with a knife about 9pm.
He said the man allegedly had no money to pay for petrol and had made an earlier demand for money before leaving and returning with the knife and another man.
“The attendant’s secured himself in a safe room, a witness has contacted police and the offenders have left in a vehicle and were arrested by police later that evening,” Detective Fisher said.
He said the attendant was shaken but not physically injured.
Police arrested a 24-year-old Bendigo man and a 36-year-old Bendigo man about 10.55pm on Saturday and charged them with attempted armed robbery.
Both men were remanded in custody and will appear in the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court today.
Detective Fisher praised the quick thinking of the witness who contacted police at the time and urged anyone else who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.
He said anyone with information should contact the Bendigo Crime Investigation Unit on 5448 1300 or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
