CITY of Greater Bendigo staff have recommended council adopts a new concept plan to stop overcrowding at the Mitchell Street bus stops.
Under the plan, traffic would be slowed to allow more pedestrian access, the bus terminal would be upgraded with widened footpaths, the streetscape improved and live timetable facilities installed.
Public transport users would be able to access real time scheduling information via smart phones. The technology would be a first for regional Victoria.
Officers are also recommending council approve developing two concept designs for a bus shelter in Hargreaves Mall where the existing obelisk structure stands at the Mitchell Street end, with one design to include the structure and the other to omit it.
The bus facilities would be funded by the state government with a request the works be delivered as soon as possible, and funds for civil works from the council budget next year be sought as a high priority. The streetscape works are estimated to cost $3 million.
Public feedback for the proposal, which was put forward late last year, has ended with the amended concept plans taking into account submissions from 14 people.
The report claims the plans will improve safety and facilities for pedestrians and public transport users in the area.
