Mitchell Starc says he will not use his enforced layoff to have surgery to repair his chronic ankle injury.

And the left-arm quick believes the pink ball held up well in the day-night Test after being one of its most savage critics.

The star left-arm quick will miss the rest of the home summer with a stress fracture in his foot but could come back for the tour of New Zealand in February. However he faces potentially another lengthy stint on the sidelines when the time comes to operate on his ankle.

Starc also revealed he had two cortisone injections after the Perth Test on his ankle. He said his ankle will eventually require surgery but if he was to go under the knife now it would all but rule him out of the World T20 from March 11-April 3 in India, where he would play a key role in helping Australia win a title that has eluded them.

"There'll be a point where that [surgery] has to happen," Starc said.

"It's something that's been managed quite well, it's been going better than expected after how it was in Cardiff. The foot's not something that rules me out the entire summer. No point doubling up and missing extra time with some surgery too."

It's likely Starc would miss several months when he does finally go under the knife for his ankle.

"[It] depends on how much damage and how much bone has broken off," Starc said. "If there's more spurs, that's something we'll look at down the track. It's not something I'm looking at doing right now though."

Starc gave the pink ball a positive review though it would be a stretch to say he has been fully converted.

"I have to be careful what i say. I didn't take too much part in it but leaving that extra bit of grass on the wicket and not having much of a square protected the ball, but it's held up pretty well by the sounds of things," Starc said.

"If they're going to keep doing that to wickets and squares it's going to be around for a while."
