A man and a woman with pink hair fled the scene shortly after 4pm on Saturday after being confronted by a witness.
“[The victim] tried to stop them after they took money from a donation box and they just started kicking and punching him,” a witness said.
“They had him on the ground and were kicking his head and swearing … it all happened so quickly.”
The witness called out and the assailants took the victim’s phone and ran off on foot down Speedy Street, near the intersection with Eaglehawk Road.
The owner of Eliades California Fish Shop was left bleeding from the head and was taken to hospital after the incident to receive treatment.
He was conscious and able to give a statement to police at the scene, though he required a translator. His wife tried to intervene to protect him from the attackers.
Sergeant Tony Kekich said police arrested a 30-year-old Long Gully man and a 25-year-old Eaglehawk woman on Stanfield Street, Long Gully, about 15 minutes after the incident.
“They had a quantity of cash on them and have been taken back to Bendigo Station for questioning,” he said.
“Investigations are continuing.”
