In September, Mount Alexander Shire Council was fined $7500 for overfilling cells at its Castlemaine Landfill by 18,000m³ of waste – pushing “the heights well above what is approved under its EPA licence”.
The EPA warned overfilling the waste site risked contaminating groundwater.
The new landfill cell and leachate pond are now operational, following recent approval from the EPA.
Council stressed they were built to “best practice engineering and environmental standards”, including a one-metre thick clay liner and a one-metre thick layer of drainage material.
The new cell will last at least four years.
