Sandhurst has given itself a chance of beating long-time nemesis Bendigo United for the first time in 14 seasons after plundering 9-353 at Bendigo Door Centre Weeroona Oval on Saturday.
In a vastly improved performance from round one, the Dragons made the most of the batting paradise to make the club’s highest score since it crunched 493 against Bendigo in 2006-07.
Captain Craig Howard, Shane Robinson and recruit Luke Rafferty all posted half-centuries for the Dragons, who haven’t beaten Bendigo United since 2001-02.
Having been 6-187, Robinson and Rafferty put on 140 for the seventh wicket.
For the second game in a row, Robinson top-scored for the Dragons with 95, before he was dismissed by Paul Fraser (2-57) late in the innings.
Robinson batted for 220 minutes, faced 166 balls and struck eight boundaries and two sixes in his innings, which started after the Dragons had lost 4-26, falling from 0-69 to 4-95.
Rafferty cracked 88 off 103 (nine fours and four sixes), while Howard hit nine boundaries in his 56 off 81.
Earlier, openers Lucas Hutchinson (33 off 41) and Manning Walsh (32 off 46) got the Dragons away to a flyer against some ordinary new-ball bowling from the Rebacks.
Bendigo United used eight bowlers, with teenager Jack Bouwmeester impressing in taking 4-49 off 16 overs.
Bouwmeester took the first four wickets to hall, while wicket-keeper Mark Di Fede claimed four catches.
Saturday was the most runs Bendigo United has conceded since Strathdale-Maristians made 347 against the Redbacks in the 2000-01 season.
EAGLEHAWK V BENDIGO
Eaglehawk recovered from the loss of two early wickets to amass 297 after being sent in by Bendigo at Canterbury Park.
The Hawks had been 2-23 after the early dismissals of captain Jason Abbott for his second duck in a row to start the season and Aaron Monro (6).
However, a pair of scores in the 80s from Cory Jacobs and recruit Josh Collinson helped push the Hawks towards 300.
In his second hit for his new club, Collinson compiled 87 off 130 (10 fours) batting at No.4.
Collinson put on 73 for the third wicket with Anthony West (35 off 102), and then shared in an 81-run stand for the fourth wicket with Jacobs.
Jacobs produced a career-best knock of 89 off 110 balls (eight fours), bettering his previous highest score of 72.
The Hawks also got valuable late order contributions from Brodie Hawke (24), Shaun Knott (23) and Richard Tibbett (11), who helped take the score from 7-251 when Jacobs went out to 297.
Captain Adam Ward (3-42 off 21) and Nathan Fitzpatrick (3-36 off 12) took three wickets apiece and Alex Pearson (2-27 off 14) two for the Goers, who used eight different bowlers.
Ward also took a catch to dismiss Sam Williams (5) and ran out Tibbett.
HUNTLY-NORTH EPSOM V STRATHFIELDSAYE
A 149-run partnership between skipper Ben Devanny and Andrew Stove helped Strathfieldsaye post 5-233 against Huntly-North Epsom at Poyser Motors Oval.
The pair came together with the Jets at 4-81 and pushed the score to 230 before Devanny was dismissed in the shadows of stumps.
Devanny – who was run out by Lachlan Brook – made 74, while Stove finished unbeaten on 72.
Stove’s 72 not out was his highest first XI score for the Jets, who at one stage during their innings lost 3-14 when they slumped from 1-67 to 4-81.
As well as Devanny and Stove, the Jets also had veterans Stephen Brown (32) and Greg Lyon (32) put on 66 for the second wicket following the early loss of opener Luke Jones (0).
The only multiple wicket-taker for the Power was Ash Gray (2-9), who in just the two overs he bowled dismissed both Brown and Lyon.
GOLDEN SQUARE V WHITE HILLS
Golden Square needs 233 to defeat White Hills and win its first game of the season.
The Demons worked their way to 9-232 at MyJet Oval in an innings where they got away to a strong start, but then suffered a collapse.
Jayden Sheehan (16) and Ryan Grundy (25) put on 57 for the first wicket, before the Demons then lost 5-32 to fall to 5-89.
However, coach Rhys Irwin (39, three fours), Oliver Geary (34, two fours, two sixes), Sam Stagg (27) and Myles Wade (20) worked hard to lead the Demons’ rescue mission and give the bowlers a score to defend next week.
Golden Square used 10 bowlers – the only player not to roll the arm over being captain Tim Wood.
Connor Miller (3-33 off 17) was the only multiple wicket-taker for Square, while spinner Liam Smith (1-15 off 6) was economical.
KANGAROO FLAT V STRATHDALE-MARISTIANS
It was tough going for Kangaroo Flat against Strathdale-Maristians, with the Roos scoring at less than two an over before being bowled out for 157 at N8 Health Oval.
The Suns had the Roos on the backfoot early at 3-26, with Josh Newlan (6), Mitch Collins (2) and Tyler Hinds (3) all back in the pavilion.
Only Jake Klemm (49) and skipper Adam Burns (43) made more than 20 for the Roos, who lost their last six wickets for 29 having worked their way to 4-128.
Leg-spinner Cameron Taylor took 3-41 off 20 overs for the Suns, while Ben DeAraugo – who didn’t concede a run off his first 49 balls – claimed 2-20 off 16.2 overs, including 11 maidens.
Wicket-keeper Linton Jacobs took two catches, as well as stumping Burns.
