There are so many great examples in Bendigo of community and business activating place.
- Karen Corr
Places for Change is a public conversation for Bendigo people to discuss creative ways to rethink public and unused spaces.
Spaces for activation range from old churches to parks, laneways to car parks.
Make a Change Australia social enterprise director Karen Corr said the night was about transforming the city.
“There are so many great examples in Bendigo of community and business activating place”, she said.
“Initiatives like the incredibly successful temporary activation of spaces like the Moonlight, Trove and the Farmer’s Market.
“The Bendigo Library is an example of a public space that is more than a home for books.
“It is a place to work, to meet others, learn new skills and hang out.”
“A really interesting example is the upcoming Pop Up Art project where young and emerging regional artists are transforming Bendigo Market Place into a temporary gallery.”
Keynote speaker Marcus Westbury will talk about the success of Renew Newcastle to regenerate a regional city.
The program activated unused buildings to be accessible to creatives, micro-businesses and community groups.
“I was seeing a lot of projects fail for people with creative and new ideas,” he said.
“Their projects were failing not because of lack of talent or ability, but because of lack of space, or legal issues or the impossibility of signing a lease for five years.”
On the night community participants will be invited to consider the creative solutions and projects to activate of key landmarks and buildings in Bendigo.
For example the Discovery and Bendigo Train Station precinct, Golden Square and its unique heritage buildings, Lyttleton Terrace a growing food precinct, and growing Ironbark Gully into a green space.
Bendigo is invited to share stories and special places and significant events on the Outside the Square’s Facebook page, facebook.com/outsidethesquarebendigo.
Outside the Square Places for Change is taking place on Thursday, October 15 at 7pm, at the The Old Church on the Hill, in Quarry Hill.
