The 20 kilowatt roof-top unit means the library will draw about 10 per cent of its power from the renewable source.
The project is a joint initiative between the Goldfields Library, City of Greater Bendigo and the Bendigo Sustainability Group (BSG).
The council has entered into a 20-year power purchase agreement whereby it will buy electricity from the group at commercial rates.
BSG, which will use the money to invest in other sustainability projects around Bendigo, said the initiative had been two years in the making and was a “major achievement” it hoped to replicate elsewhere.
