My tribe is your tribe and your tribe is mine is the latest collaboration by husband and wife artist‐duo Bonus Card.
Kent Wilson and Lucy James explore tribalism, belonging and exchange through their carved and painted pseudo-cultural icons.
Drawing on unclassified, yet strangely familiar abstract patterns and forms, they “reference no culture and every culture through (the) manipulation of designs”. In doing so they are building their own “coherent and consistent language” that explores fertility, biology and family.
Carved from local raw materials these objects merge the primitive with the contemporary. The pair see the work as “everything around us mashed into a pulpy substance and reconstituted through … materials (drawing) us closer to the roots of our feelings about belonging”.
