AFL Central Victoria has met with and informed all clubs in the Bendigo, Heathcote District, North Central and Loddon Valley leagues of how many points they have been allocated as part of the player points system.
The player points system – which rates players from one point to six based on their playing history – will be introduced state-wide next year as part of AFL Victoria’s Community Club Sustainability Program that will also include a salary cap in 2017.
The points allocation for each club has been determined following a June-July trial period for clubs to provide feedback to AFLCV.
The key criterias in determining each club’s points figure are based on geographic location, town population, junior pathways, on-field performance and how many points their list is at this year, with AFLCV mindful of clubs not having to off-load players next season to meet their points limit.
To assist clubs next year in meeting their limit, there will be a one-off doubling in the points deductions.
Under the player points system, players are deducted one point for each season of service to the club until they reach one point.
As a further incentive to club’s retaining their players next year, all deductions will be two points, which means, for instance, a three-point player this season would revert to one point in 2016.
