Senior Constable Dave Sanders said a white Ford Territory pulled out from a car park alongside the playground, attempting to perform a u-turn about 1.50pm on Sunday.
The old Ford collided with the driver-side door of the Territory at nearly 50 kilometres per hour.
The 67-year-old car was only equipped with a seat belt around the driver’s lower abdomen, meaning the driver was jolted into the steering wheel, which shattered the front windscreen from the force of the crash.
Cars built prior to 1970 typically have this design of seat belt.
The occupants of the Territory – a 73-year-old male driver and 71-year-old female passenger, both from Deer Park – did not suffer serious injuries.
All three people were taken to Bendigo Health for observation.
Napier Street was closed in both directions for almost an hour after the crash.
A large crowd of onlookers gathered as emergency services cleared the scene. Those at the scene described hearing a loud ‘bang’.
Senior Constable Sanders said a penalty notice was likely to be issued for failing to give way.
