MAIDEN Gully coach Steve Hollingsworth hopes the advice of Victorian player Rob Quiney sticks with his side’s batsmen every time they step to the crease in the Emu Valley Cricket Association this upcoming season.

Quiney took training for Maiden Gully at Bendigo Major League last Sunday, with the session including one-on-one work with each of the Gully batsmen.
Quiney was a member of the Victorian team that won last season’s Sheffield Shield in March, while he also played two Test matches for Australia against South Africa in November, 2012.
“It was great having Rob come along to training on Sunday. It was a bit of a surprise for the boys as there was only a couple of us who knew he was coming up,” Hollingsworth said on Wednesday.
“He did a one-on-one coaching session with all the batsmen and passed on plenty of advice, which, hopefully, they make the most of during the season, because the club needs to improve after being down the bottom for the past few years.”
Quiney has an association with Hollingsworth through the Lucky Stars Australia Transplant Cricket team.
Quiney is an ambassador for the Lucky Stars, which both Hollingsworth (kidney pancreas recipient) and fellow Maiden Gully cricketer Tim Chisholm (liver) play for and are also on the committee of.
Among the games the Lucky Stars play each year is what has become the annual Robyn Hookes Shield match against the Donate Life Everyday Heroes, which has again been tentatively booked for Sunday, February 21 next year at Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Park.
Quiney’s training session with Maiden Gully – which has claimed the past three EVCA wooden spoons – coincided with the launch of DonateLife week from August 2 to 9, which aims to help raise awareness of organ and tissue donation.
Meanwhile, in other cricket news, Golden Square will hold its junior registration night on Friday, August 14 at the MyJet Oval clubrooms from 5.30pm to 7pm.
All players from the under-10 to under-18 age groups are urged to attend, while the club will also be seeking expressions of interest for a girls only team for players aged between 11 and 15.
Those who register on the night will go into a draw to win their fees back.
And the Bendigo United Cricket Club is looking for a curator for Harry Trott Oval after Bob Ermel stepped down from the role.
