Since 1992 Whatley has written and/or illustrated more than 60 children’s picture books published both in Australia and overseas. He has worked with author Jackie French on the rhyming children’s tale Fire and its sister publication Flood and with Ahn Do on the award winning book The Little Refugee.
Curated by Paul Morris, La Trobe University lecturer in Graphic Design and Illustration, the exhibition will provide a rare insight into the mind and practice of this distinguished artist.
Whatley uses a variety of mediums including gouache, pen and ink, pencil, oils, watercolour and he has recently experimented with CGI software. He aims to entertain and surprise his readers with illustration styles that vary considerably depending on the text and the age group of his audience.
The exhibition opens tomorrow and runs until Sunday, August 9.
