Mokuhanga is a traditional water-based printing technique that originated in China and has been perfected in Japan.
After careful design, wooden blocks are carved for each layer of colour and then hand-printed to create deceptively simple imagery.
While the tools and equipment are relatively basic, the process is intricate.
Terry has focused on producing woodblock prints since 2006 and says that he has been “inspired by the richness of Japanese woodblock prints which are rightly world famous. I love the marriage of art and craft that is needed to produce Mokuhanga."
He will be presenting a workshop at the La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre this September, in which participants of all levels will be able to take their ideas from initial design to finished print.
