Hidden in Plain Sight is part of the Michael Buxton Collection, one of Australia’s most significant collections of contemporary Australian art.
The exhibition opened last Saturday and will run until the end of September.
Bendigo Art Gallery senior curator Leanne Fitzgibbon said it was exciting to have works on display from an extensive, private collection.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to partner with the Michael Buxton Collection which has a strong focus on contemporary Australian art. It marries beautifully with the gallery,” she said.
“It’s an infrequent but valuable opportunity to source works from a private collection and bring into the light for the public to enjoy.”
Lousie Weaver’s work Taking a Chance on Love is a significant piece in the exhibition.
Pat Brassington, Mikala Dwyer, Tony Garifalakis, Stephen Bush, Marco Fusinato, Mira Gojak, Ronnie Van Hout, Jess Johnson, Nicholas Mangan, David Noonan and Justene Williams also have works in the exhibition.
Ms Fitzgibbon said Michael Buxton has an interesting policy regarding purchasing works.
“When the purchase works, they continue to purchase works through that artist’s career,” she said.
“Some of it hasn’t been shown since 2003 so it’s fantastic to have this work.
“A number of the artist have been represented in the Bendigo Art Gallery, it is a chance to extend what is on display and enrich the public understanding of these artists.”
Ms Fitzgibbon said a number of schools have shown interest in the exhibition.
“There is a strong educational focus (on the exhibition),” she said.
“There is a program focusing on primary schools having access.”
The art gallery will also host a floor talk on Sunday, September 5. Director of The Ian Potter Museum of Art Kelly Gellatly will and curator of the Michael Buxton Collection Samantha Comte will host a guided tour through the exhibition.
Hiding in Plain Sight is on at the Bendigo Art Gallery until September 27. Entry by donation.
