Sheep and cattle farmer Reg Sweeney travelled all the way from Dubbo to show off his prized rams, one of which took out the Shorn Junior Ram class.
Mr Sweeney said it was the animal’s composure that got the judge’s attention.
“I think he stood well, held himself well, (and is) well muscled so that took his eye a bit,” he said.
Mr Sweeney said he’d been bringing his sheep to Bendigo for years and it often yielded sales down south.
“We always look at other people’s studs and are always on the lookout for rams to improve our flock,” he said.
Victorian Border Leicester Association president Heather Stoney said the quality of the sheep on show had been outstanding.
“(The judge) is looking for the same thing in every sheep and that’s structural soundness and probably a good fleece of wool,” she said. “They’ve got to be able to walk correctly stand correctly and basically just be sound.”
