A couple of seasons after playing at national under-12 titles, Caldwell will again wear the Big V when the School Sport Australia under-15 championships kick off this Sunday in Geelong.
The 14-year-old’s play through the midfield caught the selectors’ eye in a series of trial matches.
“It’s a great honour to play for Victoria,” Caldwell said before training at Golden Square.
This season he has played from a wing for the Todd Deary-coached under-18s at Golden Square in the Bendigo FL.
Caldwell said the support from AFL Central Victoria Academy development officer Rick Coburn and under-15 squad coach Carl Hardingham had helped improve many areas of his game.
“Ground level contests, marking and handpassing are skills I have worked a lot on,” said the year 9 student at Catholic College Bendigo.
A talented sportsman, Caldwell has shone on the cricket field as an all-rounder for Northern Rivers and Golden Square’s under-18s.
Fitness and strength have increased markedly through boxing training at Hit Factory in Golden Square.
His play at the School Sport Australia titles will be closely watched by parents Rodney and Samantha.
