White Hills’ 23-point win over Elmore combined with Colbinabbin’s 147-point thumping of Mount Pleasant makes it mighty hard to see the Bloods or Blues challenging the Demons for fifth spot.
Fifth-placed White Hills holds a three-game and 28 per cent advantage on sixth-placed Elmore, with Mount Pleasant a further 6.5 per cent behind.
“You don’t want to get ahead of yourself, but realistically we do look pretty safe,’’ White Hills coach Shaun Makepeace said.
“It was good to get over the line against Elmore to set up that buffer for us.
“Last year it took until the final round for us to clinch a finals berth. It’s nice to know this far out that we’ll be in the finals and we can plan around that.”
The Demons always looked the better side against Elmore, but it wasn’t until the dying minutes that they secured the points.
The Bloods cut a four-goal deficit to 10 points entering time-on in the final term, but two late goals to the Demons put paid to any chances of an upset.
The Demons gave big man Matt Sawyer a victory in his 200th match for the club. Sawyer could have made it a really big day, but he kicked poorly in front of goal, finishing with 4.8.
Luke Ryan and Jack Hayes were best for the gallant Bloods.
Colbinabbin’s win over Mount Pleasant was expected, but the margin was a shock.
The Grasshoppers made the Blues look second-rate in the 25.21 (171) to 3.6 (24) win.
Mount Pleasant didn’t kick its first goal until the final quarter.
While the Blues battled to score, Colbo star Grant Weeks bagged 10 goals of his own to take his season tally to 67.
Leroy Miller, Russell Douglas, Sam Vale and Patty O’Brien were other good players for the Grasshoppers.
The humiliated Blues were best served by Taig Griffin, Joe Griffin and Justin Kelly.
