Yarding: 13670 (-2524) Lambs: 9664 (-522) Sheep: 4006 (-2002)
THERE was a slight decrease in lamb numbers but a noticeable decline in quality, making it one of the smallest and plainest yardings held at the centre this year.
A breakdown of the yarding showed more Merino lambs on offer compared to a week ago, and a bigger percentage of lambs in plain fat score 1 and 2 condition.
All the usual buyers were present although not all operated at capacity. Price results varied according to quality.
The better finished trade and export lambs, which were in limited supply, were mostly $2 to $8 dearer, although the neatest domestic lambs, weighing 22-24kg, gained up to $11/head.
Secondary lambs lacking weight and fat cover were mostly $2 to $3/head cheaper.
The market reached a top of $200 for a pen of export lambs estimated to have a carcass weight of 30kg with a $10 skin.
Secondary lambs lacking carcass finish dominated the yarding, and many were offered in smaller pen lots of mixed quality as tail-end drafts come through the system. Most lighter weight and plain lambs sold from $80 to $115/head at varied carcass rates.
Very small crossbred lambs sold from $38 to $78/head and the odd pens which sold to restockers were dearer.
There were several big runs of light weight Merino lambs in the yarding. Restockers paid from $34 to $66.60 for the smallest Merino lambs to grow-on, while processors generally paid from $72 to $105, with a few pens of better trade weight types to $122.20/head.
Domestic lamb buyers pushed into heavier weight lambs to access better carcass finish and quality, paying up to $179/head.
Most of the lead runs of lambs, in fat score 3 to 4 condition, which sold to domestic processors made from $140 to $176/head, at estimated carcass averages of 615c to 630c/kg cwt.
There was limited export competition, due partly to a lack of extra heavy lambs. Most heavy lambs to exporters made from $170 to $188, with just the one pen at $200/head.
Sheep numbers eased to 4000 head, however competition also declined with not all the regular mutton buyers competing.
Heavy crossbred ewes were generally cheaper, as were trade weight Merino wethers. Heavy crossbred ewes sold from $92 to $130, while Merino ewes topped at $125 and wethers at $103/head.
Producers please note: All lambs and sheep presented for sale must be curfewed before transport in line with industry standards. Lambs and sheep should be crutched and well presented for sale. Current 2013 NVD’s should be filled in and completed correctly. If you require any assistance with the new NVD, please contact your agent. NVDs must accompany all stock.
