Wearing a predominantly yellow jumper in support of the Give Me 5 for Kids game day, which raised more than $10,000, the Storm’s unbeaten season continued with a 64-point win over Gisborne at Flight Centre Park.
The Storm prevailed 17.17 (119) to 8.7 (55) in what was the club’s 25th win in a row dating back to round four last year.
In his 100th game for the Storm and first since injuring a hamstring in round one, livewire Lachlan Sharp bagged eight goals.
“He only played about 70 per cent of the game, so to kick eight goals was a fantastic effort,” Storm coach Darryl Wilson said.
Team-mate Sam Mildren could have also had a big day, but he was off target, finishing with 3.9.
The Storm gained the ascendancy early with a 7.4 to 2.1 first term to lead by 33 points at quarter-time, before extending their advantage to 53 points at the long break.
While Sharp was the standout for the Storm, the victors also had midfielders David Gallagher and Shaun Everington among their best, along with captain Shannon Geary, Fergus Payne and Mildren.
Kyle Morcombe played his first senior game for the Storm, taking the tally of players Strathfieldsaye has used this season to 35.
“We were able to get away to a good start, which was important, and with what we’ve got out of the side, we’re happy with how the team is performing,” Wilson said.
Gisborne has now lost six in a row for only the second time since joining the BFL in 2000.
Bulldogs’ coach Rod Sharp lamented his side’s poor start to the game in which Gisborne laid just eight tackles in the opening term, but he was pleased with the endeavour after quarter-time.
“We didn’t apply the pressure we needed to in the first quarter, but after that I thought we showed some good signs of improvement and understanding of what we need to do,” Sharp said.
In what was a major blow for the Bulldogs, inter-league defender Tim Walsh, who had been playing on Mildren, suffered an ankle injury.
Casey Summerfield played a fine captain’s game to be the Bulldogs’ best player.
“He was really solid all day... contributed well around the stoppages, hit the ball at speed and brought others into the game,” Sharp said.
The Bulldogs also had four of their young players feature in the best - James Fraser, Darcy Rocard and Oliver Clough in defence and Jake Conolan up forward.
The Bulldogs’ tally of eight goals was made up of two in each quarter.
Full-forward Matt Knox was the Bulldogs’ leading goalkicker with four.
