But one thing remains unknown for the same-sex couple - will Australia recognise them as married in the near future?
The uncertainty comes as discussion abounds in parliament over gay marriage
Prime Minister Tony Abbott has set the conditions for a conscience vote in the Liberal party room on same-sex marriage.
The parliamentary vote could happen as early as August on the proviso that any legislation must be lifted above party politics to be successful.
Labor leader Bill Shorten will ratchet up the pace on same-sex marriage next week, forcing his own party and the Parliament to deal with the issue quickly via a private member's bill to be co-sponsored by his deputy leader, Tanya Plibersek.
Ms Bell said she planned to wait until gay marriage was legalised in Australia rather than making it official overseas.
She said that depended a lot on when the change would come to fruition.
"It just doesn't really seem fair that we have to have something less," she said.
"In all honesty, I don't think it will get passed.
"We need to follow in Ireland's foot steps and take it to a referendum.
"Five or so years ago I don't think it would have passed based on a people vote."
She said the older generations, with a more conservative view on same-sex marriage, were slowly disappearing.
"People are becoming more accepting of it," she said.
"People, like my parents, would have never supported marriage equality but obviously by having me in their life, they do."
Ms Bell said she was frustrated by how it affected people who were not gay.
"If you aren't for same-sex marriage then don't marry someone of the same sex," she said.
The couple said they simply wanted the same rights as everyone else.
"For me, personally, it is just about being able to declare my love for her, in a legal sense," Ms Bell said.
"It doesn't mean, because we can't get married that I love her any less."
