What an act of stupidity.
Joan and Chris O'Brien hit the wire while driving across the creek at the corner of Havlin Street East and Hallam Street early on Sunday.
Ironically, the couple were returning home from a wedding where they had been singing the praises of our great city.
Thankfully, the O'Briens were not injured but it's obvious given it was dark the outcome would have been very different had a cyclist or motorbike rider happened across the wire before them.
It's disturbing that when you Google 'wire across road' incidents such as this are not uncommon although rare in Bendigo.
Whoever did this was probably just carrying out what they thought was a harmless prank.
Had something terrible happened this incident would have had serious consequences for those who tied the wire across the bridge.
As Victoria Police launch an investigation into the incident, there's a good chance the outcome is going to be far from funny anyway.
It would be a good start for those responsible to put their hand up and admit their stupidity to police.
