The Bendigo City line-up made a flying start to the contest when Riley Dillon struck the first goal in the seventh minute.
Goulburn Valley equalised through Sean Ellis, but it was Bendigo City which broke clear with a superbly headed goal by Jason Shade.
An own goal made it 3-1 in Bendigo's favour by half-time.
Just two minutes into the second half and Ellis was on target again.
Another volley by Ellis levelled the contest in the 68th minute.
A few minutes later and the Suns were in front when Frank Mariner pounced on a rebound and beat the defence.
Bendigo City's run of three home games against Moreland City Zebras, Melbourne Victory and Goulburn Valley Suns all ended in defeat.
After eight games, Bendigo's record in the west conference is two wins, two draws and four defeats.
The for-against tally is 13-19.
Saturday's play at Epsom Huntly kicked off with a seven-goal victory for Bendigo City's under-20 team.
The young stars from Bendigo were determined to hit back after a big loss to Melbourne Victory the previous round.
Godwill Basha achieved a hat-trick against Goulburn Valley Suns and Josh Dwyer and Eh Soo Seven struck two goals apiece.
Sam Scoble was on target in an 8-1 victory.
Bendigo City is on the road for the Anzac Day matches against Sunshine George Cross at Sunshine.
