Families have unpacked their deck chairs and rolled out picnic rugs, with many bringing a bag full of snacks.
Jenny Dempster and her mother Norma Raeburn arrived at 9am to claim their spots at Charing Cross.
Ms Dempster, from Kyneton, said her mother liked to get a front row spot.
"I picked her up at 9am and we parked the car at the bottom of Forest Street and walked over," she said.
"She can't stand for too long so we try to get a good spot every year. It's a bit of a tradition for us."
Ms Dempster said she would knit to pass the time.
Belinda and Luke Martin and their children Phoebe, 7, Zacchaeus, 7, and Jennipher, 14, also arrived early.
The Bendigo family are regulars to the parade.
The parade starts about 1pm.
