The BSG has secured the opportunity to place 80 community-owned 20kw solar panels on the CBD building.
The City of Greater Bendigo will pay Bendigo Sustainability Group, market value for the electricity generated and consumed by the library.
The income stream from the 20 year power purchase arrangement with the council will enable the BSG to continue and expand its sustainable projects for the broader community. Installation will be completed in April, 2015.
Each panel including installation costs $400, and the target is 80 panels.
The BSG will launch a new website and marketing campaign to promote the project. More than 15 per cent of the target has been donated.
President of the Bendigo Sustainability Group Chris Weir said the project was a long time coming.
"It has been a major achievement and has taken nearly two years of hard work to develop the model," he said.
"It involved two state ministerial approvals to sign off on the model."
