THEY say the ladder doesn’t lie, but the wooden spoon certainly doesn’t do justice to just how competitive the Dragons were.
The Dragons got away to a solid start with back-to-back wins over Kangaroo Flat and Golden Square.
But what followed was a frustrating run of near misses for the Dragons, including a stretch of five-consecutive games where Bendigo United passed them nine wickets down, followed by losses to Bendigo (one run), White Hills (seven runs), Strathfieldsaye (one run) and Strathdale (17 runs).
However, it all come unstuck in the last three games, starting with an outright loss to Kangaroo Flat when they were bundled out for scores of 55 and 65 at N8 Health Oval.
The wooden spoon will hurt, but the Dragons got games into plenty of youngsters in a positive.
Their statistical leaders were both young players - Lucas Hutchinson with the bat and Liam Bowe with the ball.
When Craig Howard took on the Dragons’ coaching job in May of 2013, he said he wanted to win back the respect of the competition.
Regardless of the ladder position, he’s on the right track.
