After kicking off the season with a 2-2 draw on its home pitch at Epsom-Huntly Reserve, Bendigo City FC headed south for the second round contest.
The deadlock in the senior clash at Bulleen was broken in the 47th minute when Godwill Basha was on target from a goalmouth scramble.
Basha was on the pitch for the first time in a NPL senior match after Prince Quansah had been injured.
The depth and resilience of the City squad was well and truly tested.
An injury from the season-opener meant George McHeileh was on the sidelines and Jordan Seeto was hurt against Bulleen.
Despite the setbacks, the Greg Thomas-coached Bendigo City showed great persistence.
Basha and 15-year-old
Alex Caldow jumped at the opportunity.
A late goal by Bulleen’s Takanori Nishimoto levelled scores.
Bendigo had another chance to go ahead, but the shot was off target.
Technical director at Bendigo City, Fabrizio Soncin said there was a lot gained from the game.
“Injuries and unavailibilty meant there was a lot of pressure on all match,” Soncin said.
“It was a fantastic effort by all of the team,” he said.
The day’s action kicked off with Bendigo fighting back from 1-3 to score a 4-3 victory in the under-20 contest.
Bendigo City is on the road again this Saturday to play Brunswick.
