MARIST College Bendigo students and teachers are settling well into their new school, says principal Darren McGregor.
While there was a healthy mix of excitement and terror as students and teachers stepped through the school for the very first time, by the day's end the hype had subsided and most were feeling more relaxed.
"They were all anxious and excited but they're please with the day," Mr McGregor said.
"There's this overriding sense of how privileged we are to start something from the beginning.
"It's been a really successful day."
The school community kicked off the day with a group photo at the front of the building, to capture its special moment.
Students then spent the day with their homeroom educators, learning about the school's values and expectations.
Mr McGregor said educators were eager to adopt contemporary teaching methods, providing students with greater autonomy and responsibility for their learning.
He said the school would embrace Marist Brothers educational values, including simplicity, modesty and humility.
"The Marists own schools all over Australia, so there's a sense of belonging to a national and international family."
He said the school would encourage students to be humble before God and each other.
He said the 24 teachers were excited to help shape the school's culture.
"They've all made that decision to be part of something new," he said.
As for the remainder of the week, the students will continue to partake in orientation activities.
By Friday, Mr McGregor hopes they will start to feel like they're in a routine.
While the novelty of the school's opening will likely have worn off by next week, February 2, 2015 will be a day to remember.
