Senior Sergeant Craig Gaffee said it was unclear how the fire started, and police were waiting on a CFA investigator to assess the scene.
UPDATE 9.45pm: A house at Percival Street, Quarry Hill, was completely gutted by fire on Thursday night.
CFA crews responded to the call just before 9pm as the weatherboard house was engulfed with flames.
Three brigades attended the scene and contained the fire within the property, which closely adjoined other houses on the street.
No one is believed to have been injured in the fire.
Smoke was blown across Bendigo from the fire, with the house close to the intersection of Carpenter and Pyke streets.
The fire also attracted a large crowd of onlookers.
Powercor also attended to ensure power assets were secure.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are continuing into Thursday night.
EARLIER: CFA crews are responding to a house fire in Percival Street, Quarry Hill.
Three CFA appliances are on the scene.
The fire was reported about 8.42pm.
