SINCE Lisa Chesters and James Williams are calling for an upgrade of the Calder Highway after the recent sad incident at Lockwood, I wonder if they have actually bothered to study the cause of the crash.

According to those who attended the scene and recorded in this paper, road conditions apparently played no part.
It was unfortunately human error, which is something that we can hopefully reduce but will never eliminate.
As we constantly hear the words from Assistant Commissioner Traffic Bob Hill, “Slow down and drive to the conditions”.
The problems are two-fold nowadays. One, drivers are impatient and have no time to waste, and secondly, when something untoward does happen they never accept the blame for their own actions.
Even with all the boom gates that have been placed at railway crossings, people still drive around them when they are down.
An upgrade of the Calder Highway may assist with the traffic flow, but until you change the attitude of many drivers, accidents will continue to happen and this is even more reason for the re-testing of drivers on a regular basis.
If Ms Chesters and Mr Williams really want to assist motorists, then I call on them to lobby for a ring road around Bendigo now, not in 15 years' time.
This will help remove many vehicles, large and small, that are forced to travel unnecessarily through the city centre to their destinations.
