The crossing, where the Calder Alternative Highway and Bendigo-Maryborough Road meet, will have a "significant safety improvement".
VicRoads regional director Mal Kersting said VicRoads is currently developing a design for the TAC funded road safety project.
"This significant safety improvement will complement the previous introduction of lower speed limits to help address the ongoing crashes near the intersection," he said.
Mr Kersting said the design will see a major revamp of the intersection with a new large diameter roundabout to be installed.
The roundabout will be able to cater for the long vehicles that frequently operate along the Calder Alternate Highway.
Street lighting will also be installed to improve the visibility of the intersection.
"The roundabout will provide a balance between safety and mobility that takes the surrounding rural environment into account," Mr Kersting said.
VicRoads plans to call tenders for the construction of the $2.975 M project later this year.
The intersection of the Calder Freeway and the Calder Alternate Highway at Ravenswood will also get a safety boost with rumble strips and more prominent line markings being installed at the crossing as part of the as part of a package of road safety initiatives.
The rumble strips and new markings are in addition to a speed limit reduction in the area.
Works will begin on January 29 and are expected to be completed by February 11. Motorists travelling south on the Calder Alternate Highway may experience minor delays and temporary lane closures.
Construction on the new Ravenswood interchange is expected to begin later in 2015.
