Fosterville finds the end of the road

The project sealed the gap in Epsom-Fosterville Road, running off Axedale-Goornong Road.

The company fully funded the works, in excess of $1 million, improving access to the area for the company's trucks, nearby residents and travellers through the area.

Fosterville Gold Mine, operated by Crocodile Gold Corp, completed the project while regularly liaising with the City of Greater Bendigo's environmental review committee.

Committee chairman Councillor Rod Campbell said the company had set a positive example in community engagement.

"This is a company that is doing exactly what they said they would do. It's a $1 million project and they've made it happen," he said.

"The local area has received a really good road.

"How often do you hear of mining companies not doing the right thing? Well this company has been able to achieve this project with the backing of the community."

The newly sealed road runs around the Fosterville Gold Mine site. Works began near the entrance to the mine site.

Vehicles began using the stretch of road towards the end of December.

Nearby resident and environmental review committee member Tim Harrington said it was pleasing to see the section of road connected.

"It was something that looked to be in the distance for a long time," he said.

"I think the most important thing is that the company has been open and transparent during the process."

Fosterville Gold Mine general manager Ian Holland attended the opening and said the company was confident it could continue to provide jobs to the Bendigo community for years to come.

Crocodile Gold Corp achieved a record annual gold production from the Fosterville Gold Mine in 2014, recording 105,342 ounces.

The result was a seven per cent increase on the previous year.

The final quarter of 2014 was also the highest producing quarter at the mine, at just over 29,000 ounces.
