Rivalries are hotting up in the Bendigo Advertiser Hay Bale Sculpture Competition with two new entries rolling in.
Bridgewater neighbours Micheal Webb and James Coghlan have built a medieval castle complete with flags and a draw bridge at their property on the corner of Auchmore Road and the Loddon Valley Highway.
Mr Webb said good mate James supplied the round bales from his property down the road along with a tractor to help move them into place.
"We did it last Sunday and it probably took us the best part of a day, we started before lunch and finished about eight o'clock that night, it didn't take us long once we got into it," he said.
"We went back one night this week and put a few flags and a drawbridge on it and we think we might still paint a few windows and add a little bit more to it because people keep coming up with ideas for us."
No sooner than the drawbridge had been lowered had Mr Coghlan's father and sister entered the contest, building a hay bale caterpillar on their adjoining property.
"It's funny, James' father Frank and his sister Maggie built one yesterday and it's also quite impressive, we've got a fair bit of competition with them," Mr Webb said.
We're a bit worried about this caterpillar.

He said he and Coghlan were inspired by previous entrants Rodney and Narelle Broom's effort and thought they'd have their own tilt at the prize.
"We live not far from Rodney and we've sort of always been stirring each other up about how one day we're going to out do you so we thought we'd have crack," he said.
"We're a bit worried about this caterpillar though."
Other entries include Serpentine couple Prue and Luke Milgate's solar powered hay bale Christmas tree sculpture on the Loddon Valley Highway; Jenni Hedstrom and family's Mr and Mrs Claus on their Chanters Lane property in Tylden; Nicole and Darryl Laity's Christmas themed hay bale aeroplane at their Romsey Road property in Darraweit Guim; the Hernon family's extreme sports Santa in Allies Road, Maiden Gully; and the Brooms' Christmas tree and teddy bears on the Calder Highway near Collins Road.
All entries will go to a public vote on the Bendigo Advertiser website from January 21 to decide a winner.
The entry gaining the most votes will win return airfares for two adults and five nights at the Sun Island Legian Hotel and Spa in a Legian Suite room, and five nights at the Santi Mandala Villas and Spa in Bali.
The $4500 prize is sponsored by Grogan's Machinery and Bendigo Travel and Cruise Centre.
