The Bureau's official total was 23.6 millimetres but the Bendigo Advertiser has received unofficial reports of 71 millimetres in Bendigo and 66 millimetres in Kangaroo Flat.
The Bureau predicts another 15 to 20 millimetres for Saturday and Sunday with up to 40 millimetres due on Monday.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Terry Ryan said the sudden downpour was caused by a burst of moist air over the region associated with a tropical low pressure system which would be followed by a second low moving down from the Northern Territory via South Australia.
"It's going to mean that northern and north eastern Victoria is going to get most of the rainfall tomorrow and Sunday," he said.
"Monday we'll get a good dose of rain."
Mr Ryan said the Northern Country forecast area, which includes Bendigo, Echuca and Shepparton, had had the highest level of precipitation at 61.4 millimetres.
