THE Country Fire Authority is calling on the public not to use illegal fireworks on New Year's Eve because of dangerously dry conditions.
CFA District Two duty officer Hugh Kelly said fireworks could potentially start a fire.
"We’ve had fires started from illegal fireworks in the past," Mr Kelly said.
"You need to have a permit to have fireworks.
"There’s no rain forecast and none leading up to New Year's Eve so the potential for fire is high.
"We just want the community to understand the danger around illegal fireworks."
Mr Kelly said there was low rainfall during spring and the grass and bush were "completely dry".
"We’re looking at 38 degrees on Friday, and potentially 41 degrees and increased wind speed on Saturday. It will be an extreme fire day," Mr Kelly said.
People can report information about the sale of illegal fireworks to Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
