Two VFL games will be played at the QEO in 2015, with Geelong tackling Collingwood on Saturday, May 9, and Essendon meeting Footscray on Friday, August 21.
“We’re very happy that we’ve been able to get some quality games of footy to the region,’’ AFL Central Victoria regional general manager Paul Hamilton said.
“With the NAB Cup game (Collingwood versus Carlton) and the VFL games with good, quality clubs… there’s good support for those clubs across the region.
“The VFL clubs have been great in agreeing to come to Bendigo to play.”
Hamilton said the demise of the Bendigo Gold left a hole in elite football in central Victoria.
“It was very disappointing with what happened with the Bendigo Gold, but we really wanted to make sure we still had high quality football in the region,’’ Hamilton said.
“We wanted to attract games where people want to come along and watch.
“We have a really good, well-acknowledged facility at the QEO, and it’s important we play high standard football in our city.
“It’s important for our code.”
The Geelong and Collingwood game on May 9 will clash with country football games, but the Essendon versus Footscray game will be a stand-alone game under lights on August 21.
