Truth be told it's probably no different to years gone by but simply amplified by social media which highlights these tragedies and the instant reaction that follows.
Such was the case on Thursday with the death of Phillip Hughes.
For two days social media was awash with hope. Today, it's flooded with grief.
Hughes was immensely talented, likeable and in the prime of his life.
Everyone had an opinion on his place in Australian cricket.
His character, attitude and the way he ventured through public life behind a trademark smile is exactly why his tragic death has shocked us all.
It's also why an incredible number of tributes continue to flow on social media from fellow cricketers and other sporting greats, politicians, musicians, journalists and the general public.
Such events remind us of the fragility of life.
His character, attitude and the way he ventured through public life behind a trademark smile is exactly why his tragic death has shocked us all.
Thankfully... importantly... there was much support for bowler Sean Abbott on Thursday. How he must be feeling. He was simply doing his job.
Life sometimes is just not fair.
RIP Phil Hughes.
